Cruciform Effigy
At times I'll close my eyes and see
Above empty pews a passion'd face.
The scarred and sacred flesh that's nailed
To a crude, yet divine monstrosity.
In blinding, cursed flashes,
I'll see a bitter visage delving
Deep into my guilt and sin
To drench my face in childhood sorrow.
Thoughts of long and lonely years,
A past of suffer'd neglect,
Evoke a baseless, malevolent spirit
To pursue my doubting heart.
Again I walk toward sacrosanct alter,
With burning torch in hand,
To light the candles of deceit, to drink the bloody wine,
And consume the bread of sacrifice.
A communion feast unfolds amid
The din of Cherub's laughter.
And tears of saints bejewel the brows
Of pious, petrified cadavers.
Please! Do not rend my fragile soul
With dreams of eternal life.
Though others believe your fanciful hopes,
I shall always cherish mortality.
