Elethril - Magic

SO YOU WANT TO BE A MAGE:
Magic-users are undeniably one of the most powerful classes a person can play. They are undeniably also one of the hardest classes to play. A recently released apprentice does not have a very long life expentancy. Low hitpoints and a limited amount of spells make it an absolute must for a new mage to attach themselves to an adventuring group. However, it is often difficult for a new mage to find such a group. Adventurers are always eager to have experienced mages in their groups, but when it comes to letting a new mage in, they often turn their backs on the poor mage. During the first few levels, mages have little to offer a group of adventurers. One or two spells a day is hardly a great assest to group. In return for this paltry amount of support, the mage takes up space, eats food, takes some of the treasure, and requires constant looking out for. You wouldn't want a lone branch smacking the mage upside the head and killing him would you? Often, the young mage must master a proficiency such as herbalism or healing in order for the group to justify keeping him around.

If a young mage manages to beat the odds and survive until 5th level, he begins to contribute significantly to the party. At this time, the mage is usually considered a valued member of the group. Unfortunately, thanks to the low rate at which mages advance in level
