Divided Kingdoms - Glossary of Topographical and Political Names
ALKEMM -- Fortress/city nestled at the foot of a small mountain range (volcanicly active). Hot, harsh environment but a large natural spring provides enough water for the tough inhabitants to maintain a sizeable presence in the wastelands. Inhabitants range through all sorts of rough, hardbitten types. It takes a certain type of thug to live in the mean streets of Alkemm. Population approximately 18400.
ANGRY HILLS -- So named for the hostile inhabitants--mostly humanoid or worse, with a good variety of creatures so scary I won't mention them yet because I don't want to scare everyone away.
BLOOD ROCK -- Legend has it that this rocky island north of the mainland was the scene of a great massacre. Little remains of those old tales but the name.
CALADON -- Crossroads of the kingdom. This large town lies in the middle of the continent, at a juncture of forest and hills that forces most travellers directly to the sprawling town. The inhabitants come from all corners of the land. Population is approximately 24000.
CARSENNA -- Large city nestled in the arms of Hillesheim, with a lake a handful of leagues to the south. Inhabited by humans, gnomes and halflings, Carsenna is home to the strongest force for good in the Divided Kingdoms. Population over 50000.
DARSS -- Town on the largest island in the Plesach Archipelago. Inhabited mostly by halflings who prefer the hill country and isolated conditions. Population approximately 12500.
DEEP JERGILLEN -- Ocean to the south and east of the mainland. So named because the tides are slow rollers, the weather is steady and the waters are teeming with aquatic life.
DIRE SPIKE -- Name of the tallest mountain (12400 ft) on the large island northwest of the mainland.
ENDER'S SEA -- Stretch of ocean to the east of the mainland. Legend has it that the sea got its name when the great explorer Ender of Nubenweyr sailed to the east--and never returned.
ERRINGER FOREST -- Forest in the southern section of the mainland, lying between the Angry Hills to the north and the coastline to the south. Mostly oak trees, loosely packed. Elves often seen in the woods, though where they live is unknown.
FABTELL -- Town on the northern coast of the Divided Kingdoms. This old town predates the sundering of the land. It's a merchant and fishing town with traditions hundreds of years old. Inhabited by humans mostly, with a sprinkling of the other races. Population approximately 21000.
FALCON BAY -- High-walled inlet on the large island northwest of the mainland. Giant falcons roost on the cliff sides, natural eyries carved out by the endless action of the winds over centuries.
FALTEG'S INLET -- The old tales say that the Ocean Lord Falteg made the circular inlet as an altar to Odessa, goddess of nature and the inland waterways. The story states that the water surrounds the land, both in the inlet and around the whole mainland, giving it's protection and strength to it. A divine romance, of sorts.
FARSHORE -- Town on the southern arm of land that makes part of Falcon Bay. Home to sailors and flyers alike, of all races. Population approximately 13400.
FIELDS OF GOLD -- Verdant, broad plains dotted with farming villages and ranches. Most of the wilderness has been tamed in this part of the Divided Kingdoms.
FIRECRAG -- Active volcanoe in the wasteland known as Lychen's Fury. Overshadows the fortress/city of Alkemm.
GRAYMOOR -- A dank, damp, dangerous swamp inhabited by all manner of murk-dwelling and mud-sucking vermin. Located on the east coast of the mainland, near the middle.
GRIMMA MOUNTAINS -- Mountain range in the lower midsection of the continent. Inhabited by all manner of mountain-dwellers, from rock gnomes to earth elementals.
HELOCH -- Hellish broken land where very little survives. Most of the vegetation is poisonous and the local inhabitants aren't much friendlier. Used to be an island paradise...so the legends say.
HILLESHEIM -- Hill country in the eastern section of the Divided Kingdoms. Inhabited by humans, gnomes and halflings mostly.
IL`GULF -- Translated: Old Gulf. Many ruins on the coastline, from times before the sundering of the kingdom.
ISLE OF CYLYKON -- A large, crimson tower is built on the island in the middle of Falteg's Inlet. The tales say Cylykon, great wizard and advisor to the old king that was murdered by his sons, fled to this tower, never to be heard from again.
KASTEL -- Coastal town in the northern section of the continent. Home to the Field Guard, a veteran brigade of knights and other chivalrous soldiers. Inhabited mostly by humans. Population approximately 15900.
KRYSTUP -- Town in the middle section of the continent, just south of Spirewood and east of the Grimma Mountains. A rough and tumble kind of town, with all manner of characters boasting a story or trade. Inhabited by all sorts. Population approximately 16900.
KUR-LINR -- Large town on the eastern coast of the mainland. Extensive port facilities and fishing/merchant communities. Much of the contact with other places beyond the Kingdoms comes first through Kur-Linr. Inhabited mostly by humans, with a mix of the other races. Population approximately 18400.
LAKEWOOD -- City nestled next to a large lake in Erringer Forest. Inhabitants are mostly half-elven and human, with a smattering of the true elvenkind. Population approximately 9100.
LOHR -- Town on the northern coast of the large island that lies northwest of the mainland. Home to druids, dwarves, and gnomes. Population approximately 4300.
LYCHEN'S FURY -- Wasteland of broken, lifeless earth. Very few inhabitants in this waterless, ashen land. Legends say the god Lychen met his doom in what used to be a great swamp and his spilt blood burned the soil, drying up the lands and destroying all life. Probably what happened involves the active volcanoe known as Firecrag.
NORTHERN FOREST -- Forest in the northern section of the mainland. Home to trappers, foresters, rangers of human and half-elven stock, as well as hidden pockets of Sylvan elves. Forest is mostly elm and cedar.
NUBENWEYR -- Large town on the eastern coast of the Divided Kingdoms. Old port city, home to many old sailors and still sports a formidable fleet of warships and merchant vessels. It's most famous inhabitant was Ender, an explorer of great fame who sailed out into Ender's Sea, never to return. Inhabited mostly by humans, with a mix of gnomes and halflings. Population approximately 21700.
OSTWOLD - Translated: 'Eastwoods', this forest of oak trees lies on the northern fringe of Hillesheim in the eastern section of the continent. It's bordered by the hills and a lake. Many Sylvan and Gray elves in Ostwold, as well as human rangers and druids.
PALAX -- Mostly-dwarven city on the large island northwest of the mainland. Population approximately 32000.
PAZFULUS -- Despite being at the fringe of Lychen's Fury, this town thrives in the desert-like sands. Inhabited by humans, gnomes and halflings, this city-oasis deals in exotic goods and sports a thriving harbor. Population approximately 18300.
PLESACH ARCHIPELAGO -- Island cluster between Ender's Sea and the Deep Jergillen. Islands are mostly hilly, inhabited by halflings in the town of Darss.
QUAGH -- A town located on the east coast of the mainland, in the Graymoor swamps. A humid, vaporous place with many cutthroat inhabitants eeking out a meager and probably evil life in the midst of the murky and foul environment. Mostly human but also a number of half-goblin and half-orc denizens, among other races less pleasant than those. Population approximately 13600.
RALIOTH -- Ancient citadel built from the living rock of the Wynd Ridge. City surrounds the old fortress. This is the original place of the sundering, where the kingdom was divided by a single murderous act. The old citadel is now home to a distant relative of the last king. Population approximately 40000.
RHUN -- Town built over the juncture of two rivers. Rhun boasts thriving water traffic, serving to disperse much of the goods brought in by the hunters of the Northern Forest and the farmers of the Fields of Gold. Inhabited primarily by humans. Population approximately 13500.
SEACLIFF -- Town on a narrow peninsula of land off the southern coast of the Divided Kingdoms. Inhabited by beings of many races and home to sailors and merchants of all types. A very large town given to walls. Population approximately 23000.
SILENT TREK -- Name of the cold sea to the north of the Divided Kingdoms. Freezing temperatures and rough tides make the Silent Trek a miserable and dangerous place to sail.
SOUTH WARD -- City in the southern section of the Divided Kingdoms. The South Ward was once the protector of the southland from many barbarian invaders. Those days passed but the city remains ever vigilant. Main inhabitants are human. Population approximately 35000.
SPIREWOOD -- Sprawling forest of sequoia and ironwood trees located between the Grimma Mountains to the west and Graymoor to the east. The deeper into the forest you go the taller the trees get. Inhabitants are all manner of forest folk, from black bears to centaurs and treants.
STONEWOOD -- Forest northeast of Palax. Rough terrain, close-packed fir and pine trees.
SWORDPLAINS -- This area is named for the tall, thick grass that dominates all other vegetation. In fact, the grass is so solid that it can harm a traveler if not traversed carefully. At least the thick grass is edible and provides hearty nutrition to those who are tough enough to eat it.
SYDMIRE -- City located in the heart of Graymoor. This fortress is said to house a coven of dark witches and warlocks who feed off the evil breeding in the steaming swamps. It's exact location is unknown. Population-???
TRAYSIA'S HEART -- Ocean to the west and south of the mainland. Nomadic raft communities, some quite large, roam the ocean, following the tides and living their lives away from the warring factions of the Divided Kingdoms. Legends says the last queen, Traysia, fled with her daughters onto the ocean....
TYCAIRN -- Ruins of a once thriving town on the savage wasteland called Heloch, west of the mainland. Population--???
UFEOD -- Town south of the Fields of Gold, west of Hillesheim and east of Wynd Ridge, on the coastline of the Il`Gulf. This port village serves much of the northern section of the mainland, taking goods and foodstuffs across the Il`Gulf to Wyk faster than travel through the hills of the Wynd Ridge allow. Inhabited mostly by humans. Population approximately 11800.
VALLENDAR -- Town on the northeastern fringe of Lychen's Fury, on the shore of a very large lake. Mountain elves from the Wynd Ridge often appear in Vallendar to trade for the horns of the famed Loch-deer, as well as fish and other wares. The inhabitants are mostly human, with a mix of others. Population approximately 17700.
WILD COAST -- Most of the southern coastline of the mainland is occupied by cutthroats, bandits and beasts of all kinds. Many small communities, usually harbored within stone walls, glean a meager living from the countryside.
WILDEWOOD -- Small but surly woods on the northern coast. Many of the wood's denizens are those seeking shelter from the strong presence of order and law in the area. Forest made up mostly of oak and pine, loosely packed.
WYK -- Town on the cost of the Il`Gulf. Humans inhabit the town mostly but other races are not uncommon. Merchant community. Population approximately 19700.
WYND RIDGE -- Range of mountains in the middle of the Divided Kingdoms. With large, hill-valleys between the mountains, the winds tend to grow strong during certain periods of the year.
YNOK -- This rough town is located between the Angry Hills and the Grimma Mountains--a most harsh environment indeed! The town is comprised mostly of humanoids, though many 'half-humans' such as half-orcs and half-goblins also reside there. Humans also are seen roaming the streets. Population approximately 45000.
