New Mecca is a major southern coastal city on the island of California. New Mecca was founded on the devastation of many of the smaller towns and cities after the earthquake that made California an island. After slowly rebuilding on the ruins, New Mecca blossomed and became not only a major port and shipping city, it also became a beacon for hi-tech industry and medical facilties. Luckily for New Mecca, there was a lot of room for expansion. The city grew in leaps and bounds. New hi-tech industries and new medical facilities were popping up all over the place, and with them came new citizens of New Mecca looking for work. The Corporation realized that New Mecca was becoming a major city and built a large headquarters campus in what was then the outskirts of New Mecca.
With the growth of New Mecca, it has formed many different types and styles of districts. The older sections of New Mecca were abandonned or rented out to smaller companies. This eventually gave New Mecca a rather large ghetto district. Crime now runs rampant in the origins of New Mecca.
With the hi-tech industries and medical facilities flocking to New Mecca, it was just a matter of time before more and more powered beings started to populate the city. Suddenly New Mecca wasn't just a major city on the island, it was also the super being capital of not only California, but most of the main coast of the United States.
Places of Interest:
The Corporation Headquarters Campus: The Corporation built a rather large, self-contained campus in New Mecca. The campus has it's own security force, fire department, post office, etc. Many of The Corporation agents and employees live within the compound, but are not made to do so. Security in and out of the compund is very strict. Every vehicle in and out runs through several checkpoints, including being subject to x-rays of the vehicle and it's contents. All personnel not authorized to carry weapons within the compound have any weapons on them confiscated. All personnel that are authorized to carry weapons within the compound must have Corporation authorized weapons, all others are confiscated. No authorized personnel are allowed to bring visitors in the compound without prior authorization. Authorized visitors must be accompanied by a Corporation Escort at all times, and will remain at the outer checkpoint until the Escort is available and on location.
New Mecca Mall: The New Mecca Mall is one of the largest malls in America. It rivals Mall of America. With 4 levels and miles of shops. It contains just about anything a person would want to do. A large movie theater and a level full of just clubs, bars, and restaurants.
Old Mecca: Old Mecca is the original spot that New Mecca was founded on. It is now mostly slums and abandonned buildings. A few small businesses still attempt to thrive in it, but with limited success. Crime and gangs are a way of life in Old Mecca. It would take something major to get the police or C.Opers (Corporation Operatives) in this area. Basically, the police only deal with the more wealthy areas of New Mecca and allow Old Mecca to police itself.
Beaumont District: The Beaumont District is the wealthiest district in New Mecca. It is named after Joseph Beaumont, the first self-made millionaire of New Mecca. Joseph Beaumont helped to rebuild after the earthquake, and in the process he became the wealthiest man in New Mecca for his time. This district is where he built his mansion. Now it is home to the elite of New Mecca.
Beaumont Mansion: The Beaumont Mansion has been preserved and is now a tourist attraction, to the dismay of many of it's snobbish neighbors. It is one of the most popular and scenic sites in New Mecca. The grounds are covered with sculptures and gardens. Scheduled tours are given daily.
Beaumont Medical Center: Another of Joseph Beaumont's lasting contributions to New Mecca. This facility has been moved and revamped several times since his death, but in keeping with the spirit of his contributions to making New Mecca what it is today, the name has never changed. The Beaumont Medical Center is located in the Singer District and is the leading medical facility and hospital for New Mecca. It's a combination teaching facility, research facility and medical facility for the public. The medical center has gained national, and international, attention on more then one occassion because of the research being conducted. The current president and CEO of the center is Dr. Michael Sentin.
Coastal Crusaders Headquarters: The headquarters for THE California super hero group. It is located on the northern outskirts of New Mecca along the beach. It's a large fenced in compound with strict security measures and a small specialized security force.
Allied Chemicals: The premere chemical research facility in New Mecca. It deals with a lot of Government and Corporation contracts. It is second only to Stellar Research. The current president of Allied Chemicals is Richard Ellis.
DGE (Digital Guardian Enterprises): DGE specializes in making security robotics. The current president of DGE is Alex Kane.
Stellar Research: Stellar Research deals in medical and chemical research, as well as robotics and bionics. It is THE most prestiges facility in all of New Mecca. There is a waiting list to work for Stellar. They handle the majority of the Government and Corporation contracts. Only when Stellar can't take a contract, will they seek out others. The current president of Stellar Research is Cynthia Tyler.
Super Being Control Agency: The SBCA has a registration building in New Mecca. All people with powers are required by law to register with SBCA. It is also a medical center of sorts. As they perform physicals on everyone that comes in and registers. They use the physicals to not only determine possible unknown powers, but to also further their own understanding of powers and how to detect them. SBCA is supported by The Corporation. Security for SBCA is handled by The Corporation.
Dead Grill: One of the few businesses that probably will always survive in Old Mecca. This seedy bar never asks questions, and never gets involved. It is the meeting spot of the criminal element in Old Mecca.
Mecca Park: Mecca Park is a huge park that literally separates Old Mecca from the the other districts of New Mecca. The park was originally built on the outskirts of the original city. Now it's almost in the center of New Mecca. There is a decent size amusement park, a small man made lake in the middle, miles of bike trails, picnic areas, statues of New Mecca founders, a small zoo, plenty of food vendors, and a outside, open stage for musical concerts. All in all, it's a good place to get away and relax.
Singer District: The Singer District is the middle to upper class district. It is where most of the activity in New Mecca takes place. There are plenty of hotels and tourist attractions. A large portion of the "working community" lives here.
People of Interest:
Darius Harding: The current mayor of New Mecca. Darius takes his job very seriously. He'd like to make New Mecca even more prominent then it already is. He's always trying to think of ways to bring new and diverse commerce into New Mecca. He'd also like to revitalize Old Mecca. But trying to come up with a plan to wipe out the crime is Old Mecca is overwhelming. There are so many issues for him to focus on, that the revitalization keeps taking a back burner. He also despises The Corporation presence in New Mecca. The Corporation tends to "strongly advise" in way too many affairs of the city that he wishes to run without that outside interference. Darius is straight forward and tells it like it is. This has won him public trust and admiration.
Cynthia Tyler: If there is anyone that has influence in New Mecca, it is Cynthia Tyler. She is a very strict, no nonsense, businesslike woman. She won't stop until she gets what she wants. She is very driven and is always thinking of Stellar. Many describe her as the mother of all cold-hearted bitches, but never to her face. It is these qualities that have kept Stellar Research at the top of the field. Without her many of the Government and Corporation contracts would have gone to the competitors. But as it is, she gets to pick and choose the business they get. And she loves it that way.
Alex Kane: Alex always looks like he's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Half the time, he probably is. DGE does a lot of work and makes a lot of money, but he'd love to cut down on the amount of "glitches" some of the protype robots seem to have. He's already rebuilt parts of the DGE building 4 times. He's had more press coverage concerning runaway robots then he'd care to talk about. To top it all off, he's recently lost his 4 best engineers to Stellar.
Coastal Crusaders: The only government sponsored Super Hero group in California, and they are based in New Mecca. This 6 member team can constantly be seen all over New Mecca. Members: Iron Eagle, Energetic, Shooting Star, Living Statue, Power Girl, and Psy-Stryker.
Liberty Legion: The Liberty Legion is a group of 6 super heroes that have plenty of public support, but no government support at all. They are the most loved outlaw group in all of California. Whenever something happens, and the Coastal Crusaders are out of town, the Libery Legion steps up to the plate and handles the situation. Members: American Eagle, Flagman, Jolt, Chance, Stonewall, and Vapor.
The Enforcers: The Enforcers are a 7 member outlaw super group. At one point they were government sanctioned. But after a few incidents with Dewolfe, the group leader, they lost their sanctioning and were told to disband. Instead of disbanding, they went underground. They are wanted by the Government and The Corporation. Members: DeWolfe, Dark Titan, Tank, Tigress, Polarize, SilverWolfe, and Armstrong.
Shockwave: An ex-member of The Enforcers. He left The Enforcers right when the Super Powered Registration Act was re-enacted. He went underground and has fought against The Corporation and the Government ever since. He's more wanted then The Enforcers, because they atleast still fight criminals and leave the Government alone unless confronted. Shockwave is also considered dangerous because of his past co-op military background.
Janice DeWolfe: Janice DeWolfe is one of many Corporation lawyers, but she always seems to be in the media's attention, and gets the toughest Corporation cases. She's shrewd and a tough attorney. She has to be, because for anything to go to court these days is pretty serious and it's typically a country vs. country or country vs. Corporation case. From time to time, you may even see a large corporation try to take on The Corporation. When they do, they better be ready to face DeWolfe. DeWolfe's ex-husband, John DeWolfe, is the team leader of the Enforcers, a rogue super group on the island of California.
Richard Ellis: Richard is a kindly looking older gentleman. Allied Chemicals is his baby. He still gets in the labs and works along side the other scientists. He's very respected in the workplace and the community. Allied Chemicals sponsors many charity and public events.
Cassidy Boniface: Cassidy is a young, determined reporter for the local news. She wants to be taken seriously as a reporter. She seems to always be on the scene whenever something "super hero/villain" related happens. She's become well known among the Powered community, and many respect her for the way she tells their story. Cassidy is quickly rising in the ranks of her chosen field with all the breaking stories she brings to the station.
Hellcop: Hellcop is a vigilante super hero. He targets super criminals, but has no problem fighting anyone that tries to stop him. When he catches up to the criminals, they had better hope someone comes along to stop him! Hellcop does not allow his targets to make it to court. He is very brutal and kills without mercy. There are rumors that Hellcop was once a real cop. Lately he seems to be focusing his attention towards Old Mecca.
Dean Thatcher: Dean runs The Corporation headquarters in New Mecca. He is a harsh, stern man with a definite mean streak. In public he is quiet and brooding unless crossed. He despises having to go through Darius Harding and having to convince him which direction is the correct direction for the city to take. He longs for the day that The Corporation just takes over the governments of the world.
Nell Lena: Nell is the head of the SBCA registration building in New Mecca. She's a kind woman that tries to treat everyone fairly. But she can be very no nonsense when it comes to difficult powered beings that don't cooperate when registering. She also is very aware that The Corporation is the main support of the SBCA. With that in mind, she will not hesitate to report anything she finds suspicious or of interest to The Corporation.
Dr. Michael Sentin: A caring and compassionate man that hasn't forgotten why he got in to the field of medicine. Of course, he's also a shrewd businessman that knows he needs to keep the medical center out of the red. Dr. Sentin is often pulled in several directions when it comes to the research and treatment of Powered patients. He's attempted to keep the medical center in a neutral light and allow the treatment of any and all that need it. This hasn't always earned him a high regard in Corporation eyes. But, they can't deny his efforts to help the SBCA either. Dr. Sentin seems to be constantly at odds with Cynthia Tyler from Stellar Research.
