Saturday 3/18/2006: The grand opening of the Rocheter A Game of Thrones CCG meta was a success as far as I am concerned. Unfortunately there was a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament scheduled for the same day, so we lost a few players to the game they were more familiar with. About 4-5 people were debating which game to play right up until the two tournaments started. We also had 4 people that had let me know ahead of time that they ended up having to work that day and could not make it for the tournament. So there is a potential 8 more players to play in future tournaments.

We may have lost some people toother events, but we did gain a player that basically walked in the store, got a quick run down of the game, and decided to play in the event. We ended up having 10 people play in the event and I just walked around and answered questions and kept track of time.

People playing included: Jason (new guy off the street), Rob (a player from the twin cities), Nate (the Card Developer), Chadd (new player), Cory (new player), John M (new player), Steve (semi-retired player that lives in the area), Jack (semi-retired player that came from the twin cities), Gretchen (my wife), and John D (new player).

I started the event with the drawing for the two new players that were going to play for free. Jason and Cory both won and got their starter decks and 3 booster packs for free. I then handed out the Old Bear's Crow promo card to each player as they paid for their cards. I also handed out the 20 power counters to each player. Nate French, collectible card developer for Fantasy Flight Games, also brought a bunch of promo cards with him and players were able to look through them and pick out promos. We allowed the new promo (Old Bear's Crow) to be used for deck building, but not the ones Nate brought.

Every went off and opened their cards and spent 30 minutes putting together a deck. The theme was a day of Starks. ;-}

Round 1:
Gretchen (Stark) vs. Chadd (Stark) - Winner: Gretchen
Nate (Stark) vs. John D. (Baratheon/Lannister) - Winner: Nate
Steve (Stark/Lannister) vs. Jason (Baratheon w/ Night's Watch Agenda) - Winner: Steve
Rob (I missed what Rob was playing), vs. Jack (Baratheon/Lannister) - Winner: Jack
Cory (Stark/Lannister) vs. John M. (Stark) - Winner: Cory

Round 2:
Gretchen vs. Cory - Winner: Cory
Nate vs. Jack - Winner: Nate
Steve vs. Rob - Winner: Steve
Jason vs. Chadd - Winner: Chadd
John M. vs. John D. - Winner: John D.

One of my favorite matches from this round was the Chadd vs. Jason match, which was extremely close and even with Chadd giving one of Jason's renown characters a Night's Watch trait, and then playing Ygritte to take control of the character to gain a quick 4 power. Even by doing this, the round ended (time was up for the round) with Chadd winning by only 1 power. It was a well played round that could have gone either way and it was nice to see a new player catch on to such a nice combo to give himself a power swing.

The first couple of rounds were a little slow. There were a lot of questions to answer and everyone was getting use to their decks. But it was well worth it and everyone seemed to have a good time. At this point John M dropped out. Rob decided to drop to keep the match-ups even and to make the trip back home. Thanks again Rob for coming out and supporting the event! I should also mention that when Rob showed up he gave me some extra Gold Dragon Certificates, demo decks, and play mats. Very cool. Nate also supplied me with some extra Gold Dragon certificates and some demo decks to replenish all the decks I had given out.

Round 3:
Cory vs. Nate - Winner: Nate
Steve vs. Chadd - Winner: Steve
John D. vs. Jack - Winner: Jack
Jason vs. Gretchen - Winner: Gretchen

Round 4:
Steve vs. Nate - Winner: Nate
Gretchen vs. Jack - Winner: Gretchen
John D. vs. Jason - Winner: John D.
Chadd vs. Cory - Winner: Cory

Just before pairing off the top 4, I had the drawing for the rest of the prizes.

I added two AGOT card vaults to the prize list at the last minute. I also placed a booster pack in each vault. Cory and Jason each won a card vault. John D. walked away with the Night's Watch T-shirt. And the big prize, a set of the Ice and Fire series (4 hardcover books) went to Chadd. I also passed out a survey to get some general information back on the interest for future events, etc. It was a very short, multiple choice survey. Those that returned it to me got another booster pack. Nate decided to end his 4-0 run to let the newer players round at the top 4, but he stuck around to see how things turned out.

Round 1 for Top 4:
Steve vs. Cory - Winner: Steve
Gretchen vs. John D. - Winner: Gretchen

Round 2 for Top 4:
Steve vs. Gretchen - Results: Steve (1st Place), Gretchen (2nd Place)
John D. vs. Cory - Results: John D. (3rd Place), Cory (4th Place)

Steve might have been playing Stark/Lannister but Arianne Martell was a great asset in his deck, especially once he added a few attachments. Steve took 1st and Gretchen took 2nd. John D. and Cory faced off right up until store close and ended with a close match but John D. took 3rd and Cory took 4th.

First place won 160 Gold Dragon certificates and a booster pack. Second place won 120 Gold Dragon Certificates and a booster pack. Third place won 40 Gold Dragon certificates and a booster pack. Fourth place got a booster pack.

All in all it was a good event with a nice turn out. Everyone got to see the amount of trash talking I have to put up with from my wife. heh heh. Seriously, she did real well especially for someone nervous about even participating in a tournament. We pulled in 5 new players for this event. It also sounds like Steve and Jack came out of semi-retirement to play in this event and are looking forward to future events. Thanks for checking out the event guys!

Future tournament recaps will be brief. I just wanted to expand a bit on our grand opening event!
